Doctor: Hola María, buenos días. Ya tenemos los resultados de la biopsia.
(Hello Maria, good morning. We now have the results of the biopsy.)
María: Buenos días doctor, ¿y qué dicen los resultados?
(Good morning doctor, and what do the results say?)
Doctor: El tumor es maligno. Tiene cáncer, que como Usted sabe, es una enfermedad difícil pero se puede tratar.
(The tumor is malignant. You have cancer, which as you know, is a difficult illness, but can be treated.) Note: Literally, "se puede tratar" means "it can treat itself," using a reflexive form of speaking, and this is a common way to express the passive voice, as translated in English above.
María: ¿Y cuáles son mis opciones?
(And what are my options?)
Doctor: Las opciones de tratamiento dependen de la localización, del tipo de células, y la agresividad del tumor, lo que nos permite establecer el estadio del cáncer.
(The treatment options depend on the location, the type of cells, and the aggressiveness of the tumor, which permits us to establish the stage of the cancer.)
María: ¿Cuándo moriré,...pronto?
(When will I die...soon?)
Doctor: Eso no podemos saberlo todavía. Por lo pronto le puedo decir que el tumor es agresivo y está un poco grande, pero en una zona que es operable, así que tendrá que recibir radiaciones para reducirlo antes de operarlo.
(We cannot know that yet. For the moment, I can tell you that the tumor is aggressive and it is a bit large, but in an area that is operable. So you will have to receive radiation to reduce it before operating.) Note: "Así que" is an important phrase to remember.
María: ¿Y qué es eso?
(And what is that?)
Doctor: Es un procedimiento no doloroso, en el cual la pondrán en un aparato especial que emite unos rayos apuntados directamente hacia el tumor, para matar las células malignas.
(It is a procedure, not painful, which involves putting you [in which they will put you] in a special device that emits some rays aimed directly toward the tumor, to kill the malignant cells.)
María: ¿Y luego me operarán, y eso será todo?
(And later they will operate on me, and that will be all?)
Doctor: No. Los otros estudios mostraron que ya hay cierta diseminación del tumor, así que también va a necesitar quimioterapia, es decir, medicinas que matan las células malignas tratando de multiplicarse.
(No. The other studies showed that now there is some spreading [dissemination] of the tumor. Therefore, you are also going to need chemotherapy, that is to say, medicines that kill the malignant cells trying to multiply.) Note: Observe that the use of commas is not always the same in Spanish and English.
María: Yo he oído que la quimioterapia produce mucho malestar general. ¿Es cierto?
(I have heard that chemotherapy produces a lot of general discomfort. Is it true?)
Doctor: Sí, en algunas personas puede producir dolor de cabeza, mareos, y lo más frecuente es intensas náuseas, que se pueden disminuir administrándole un medicamento intravenoso.
(Yes, in some people it can produce headache, dizziness, and the most frequent (secondary effect) is intense nausea, that can be diminished by giving an intravenous medication.)
María: ¿Voy a tener dolor? ¿Qué va a pasar si el dolor no se me quita?
(Am I going to have pain? What is going to happen if the pain does not go away?) Note: Observe that the reflexive form of the verb "quitar" is "quitarse," and can mean "go away," "come out," etc.
Doctor: Probablemente va a tener dolor. Se le darán medicamentos analgésicos intravenosos fuertes. Si no es suficiente, tal vez se le pueda bloquear directamente el nervio que inerva la zona afectada.
(You are probably going to have pain. Strong intravenous analgesic medications will be given to you. If it is not sufficient, maybe the nerve that innervates the affected area can be blocked directly.)
María: Usted sabe que mi familia y yo somos muy unidos. ¿Hay alguien que pueda hablar con ellos y les explique lo que sucede?
(You know that my family and I are very close. Is there someone that can speak with them and explain to them what is happening?)
Doctor: Sí. Tenemos un equipo completo de especialistas, consejeros y psicólogos, disponibles para estar en contacto con Usted y cualquiera de sus familiares que necesite más información acerca de la enfermedad y su tratamiento.
(Yes. We have a complete team of specialists, counselors and psychologists, available to be in contact with you and any of your relatives that need more information about the illness and its treatment.)
María: Gracias, doctor.
